Summer proof your house with a patio awning

Finally, spring is here – the days are getting longer and the flowers are blossoming once more. This is the time of year when our thoughts begin to turn to summer and how wonderful it will be when we’re able to throw open all the windows and patio doors and fill the house with fresh air and the scent of flowers. With any luck it’ll be a lovely summer – after all, we deserve one! It’s nice to look forward to long hot days making way for balmy evenings when we’ll be able to sit outside long into the night.

If you want to be prepared for a lovely summer, this is the right time to start planning ways of improving your home and garden. And one of the best investments you could make is to install a retractable patio awning. Here’s why.

Protecting you from the sun

An awning protects you from the sun’s fierce rays in the same way that a patio umbrella does, only better. The advantage of an awning is its size. An umbrella only gives enough shade for a few people, and as the sun moves over the sky, the shadows move too. This means that to stay in the shade, everyone has to move their chairs around with the sun. But because your awning will cover the entire patio, everyone will have as much shade as they need all day without having to lift a finger!

Keeping the house shady

An awning will also help to keep your house cool by shading it from the heat of the sun. As our utility costs rise, this will also prevent the need to use fans or air conditioning and help to keep your bills down. On south-facing windows, an awning will help reduce solar heat gain by 65% (77% on west-facing windows). Stopping the sun’s rays from getting into the house will also help to prevent your curtains and furnishings from fading.

Sitting outside during a refreshing summer shower

Although the UK is getting drier and warmer, rain is still a frequent visitor. In the summer, a shower can be extremely refreshing, and if you’re under the cover of an awning, you can stay outside and enjoy the cooling rain without getting wet. Having a patio awning will also mean that you don’t have to hurriedly close the patio doors as the awning will prevent the rain from getting into the house.

You don’t have to worry about windy days

We have also become used to windy days, which can be a real problem for owners of patio umbrellas. When wind speeds pick up, homeowners have to take steps to prevent damage, by putting umbrellas away in a safe place or making sure they’re tightly furled and lying on the ground. Protecting a retractable awning from the wind is as easy – all you have to do is press a button and watch it roll up into its casing. Job done!
