Time for a garage makeover?

Garage Makeover, Painting & DIY

If your garage is beginning to lose its kerb appeal, then it may well be time for a garage makeover. A well-maintained and good-looking garage door will enhance the appearance of your home at the same time as helping keep it secure. So it’s worth taking the time and trouble to keep it in good condition.

If you want to give your garage door a makeover, here are some of our top tips on how to do it.

The first thing to do is to clean your garage door. It’s amazing how much dirt can accumulate, and a good wash using washing-up liquid, warm water and a soft cloth could even end up being enough to bring the door back to life!

Can you fix it?

If the answer is ‘yes you can’, then do so. If your door is no longer in warranty, there are a few basic fixes that you should be able to do yourself, whether you have a squeaky mechanism, an obstruction or a wonky roller.

If there is a gap between the bottom of your door and the ground, you can buy seals made from rubber or brushing to affix to the door. These will help prevent draughts, rain and pests getting into your garage.

Wooden and metal garage doors can easily be repainted to give them an ‘as good as new’ look. If you’ve not painted a garage door before, check DIY websites and videos for advice on how to prepare and prime it, as well as the best paints to use.

If you have metal doors, you can now buy magnetic decorative garage door accents which will make a plain door look much more interesting but will not be permanent or mark the door. They won’t fall off or move when you open the door so will look like a permanent fixture, with the added advantage that when you get tired of them, you can simply remove them.

If you’ve always wanted an automatic garage door but don’t need to replace your current up-and-over manual one, install a separate electric opener which will give you the best of both worlds.

If your old garage door is damaged, difficult to open or close, or simply not up to the job any more, then a makeover isn’t going to solve those problems, and it’s time to replace it. The beauty of a brand-new door is that it will not only look good and be more secure, it will also provide extra insulation – which will be of great benefit if you use the garage as a workshop. A new garage door will also give your property increased kerb appeal and can add thousands of pounds to its value.

There is a lot to think about before buying a new garage door, from materials used for the door itself and how it will fit in with the rest of your property, to the mechanism used to open it. In our experience, the majority of people buying new doors will opt for the convenience of an automated one.
